Singapore, 28th January 2018 – From 31 January to 4 February, 2018, students from all over the ASEAN region and China will gather in Singapore for the Youth Environmental Summit (YES) 2018, an integrated program focused on introducing youths to hot-button environmental issues through inspirational seminars by prominent experts and social entrepreneurs, educational field trips and learning workshops, as well as social business conceptualizations and presentations.
At this year’s YES, close to 400 participants will be coming from various countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines, Laos and China. The 5-day conference is specifically designed to promote environmental awareness and responsibility among youths aged 9-18 years through educating them about relevant and pressing issues such as global climate change, food and water sustainability, urban development, environmental conservation, and the importance of “reduce, reuse and recycle.”
While there are many issues threatening the environment, the organizers of the conference believe in the untapped and limitless potential of today’s youths in taking a stand against these issues. They will learn from prominent speakers and experts such as Ms. Isabella Loh, Chairman of the Singapore Environment Council, who will attend as the Guest of Honour and share her passion for environmental issues and her years of experience and knowledge with the young participants. Other speakers include Mr. Dominic Sharpe, Country Director at Liger Leadership Academy, who founded two successful businesses and is the co-founder and trustee of non-profit The Cambodian Children’s Charity and Ms. Cuifen Pui, Senior Environmental Scientist at DHI and a speaker and entrepreneur on climate action, sustainability and personal development.
The participants will get the chance to conceptualize environment-related projects geared towards improving their local communities. They will be mentored by industry experts and present their envisioned social enterprise ideas to a qualified panel of judges who will determine which ideas are the best when it comes to self-improvement, effort, personal achievement and potential capabilities. Upon returning to their home countries, all participants will be encouraged to implement their ideas. Winners for the implementation competition will be invited to YES 2019 to receive awards and share their experiences and tips with next year’s participants.
